Our city faces big issues, like transportation, accessibility and natural disasters. How can we shape a better future for everyone? Are you ready to build a better tomorrow together?
FIRST LEGO League has always been about more than just robots. Every year, students around the world use their innovative thinking skills to explore a new theme and create a project that improves their neighborhood, city, or even the world. This year, the theme is CITY SHAPER, which focuses on how we can improve city life. Now that innovation is more important than ever, we're opening up the challenge to all groups, individuals, FLL, and FLL Jr. teams in NYC. To join the City Shaper Innovation Challenge, you will need to:
- Identify a problem with a building or a public space in your community and design a solution.
- Create a 2D or 3D model of your solution using LEGO or other supplies.
- Record a presentation of your problem and solution and share it with NYC FIRST.
Volunteer judges from companies and universities around New York City will be volunteering to reviewing your presentation and providing feedback on your solution. You can use the feedback to improve your idea. At the beginning of June, we’ll be putting together a showcase of your projects on this page!
Submission Guidelines
- Your video should include: (1) the problem that you’ve identified and why it matters to you, (2) your proposed solution, (3) an optional tri-fold poster board explaining your process, and (4) a LEGO-based (or other materials and supplies) model that helps present your solution.
- If you participated in the FIRST LEGO League CITY SHAPER season, you may build off of your existing CITY SHAPER project or submit a completely new idea.
- Your video should be no more than five minutes long.
- Be sure to include a Team Name for your group (even for just one student) and a Project Name. We welcome multiple project submissions from teams.
- You will need to upload your video onto a file sharing site and submit a shareable link. If you're using YouTube, we recommend that you change your video privacy settings to "Unlisted."
- Files that are not hosted on YouTube should be uploaded as a .mov or .mp4 file.

Deadlines
Please submit your project video by Sunday, May 31st. Volunteers will be reviewing projects for the entire month of June.
